personal trainer arrested after molesting a boy during a fitness work-out.
MIAMI – Convicted sex offender John Couey fled Georgia after kidnapping, raping, and killing nine-year-old Jessica Lunsford in northern Florida, it took authorities almost a month to track him down.
A pedophile with a long history of abusing children, Mr. Couey was one of almost 60 sex offenders whose whereabouts were unknown to authorities in Citrus County after he failed to comply with the requirement to inform them of a new address. He simply disappeared from the state’s logs.
miamipress has been investigating and crunching numbers. We wanted to take a look to see how many known sex offenders live in a 5 mile radius of employees.
In one we found 149 in the other 107. This is not counting those who have disappeared. Since most cases are isolated and spread thru counties and states most are not reported. Florida has about 30,000 registered sex offenders.
We are convinced that this is a major epidemic in Florida. A recent Miami Herald investigation claimed that Florida’s law-enforcement agencies had lost track of more than 1,800 sex offenders.
Is it time for the debate about 1 strike and your out? Most everyone believes in redemption. But what if there is no way to stop the repeat offender? This is the latest one.

According to Miami Beach Police, David Silva slid his hands down a 13-year-old boy and penetrated him during a work-out session.
The traumatized boy told his mother, who contacted authorities. “I said to him, we need to call the police. We need to tell people. You know, whatever happened to you is going to happen to another child. We can’t have this happen to anyone else,” said the boy’s mother.
