Update:Big Brother Rapist Favorite to win

Posted on November 3rd, 2007 by mpress101

Reaction is strong with this scandal. Most people think Richard is getting a pass because of his personality and looks

Here’s a reason to never wish The Hills were “more real”: so remember Richard? He raped a housemate on Big Brother Africa and they’re apparently showing it next week because they decided it wasn’t rape even though it was. We were confused enough to start touring Big Brother Africa blogs, and we figured it out: Reality Rapist Richard is really popular. He’s had a really fun affair with another housemate, and whereas his victim Ofunneka is sort of a boring neat freak who is kind of motherly and crap, Richard is really cute and chill, and in fact everyone in his native Tanzania still cheering for him to win the prize. “In his quest for the prize he has not stepped on anybody’s toes the way some people did,” wrote one fan, TODAY. (Um, yeah, because he was too busy sniffing the finger he stuck in that unconscious housemate’s pu**y?)Source: Jezebel

The happenings on Saturday were a shocking eyesore. As Africa reacted and asked what steps MNET will take to correct the fiasco. Of course, MNET’s take on it was that it was a consensual act that took place. But how consensual can it be when a housemate is passed out and the other is so drunk that the paramedics had to be called in? I am not writing this to attack MNET’s policy (even though, I feel that South African Entertainment lawyers should really be looking at that) but rather to ask – why there is such a huge double standard in Africa? The outburst from Africa has been one in which Ofunneka – the other third in the fiasco that took place has been lambasted. She has been called all sorts of names including the more famous one – ‘Ofufinger’. This name is tied to the sexual act that Richard performed on her. Africa has decided that she needs to be punished for the act that took place on Saturday and I am left wondering - Is she being punished because she is a woman or is it because she is deemed as being ‘ugly’ (Africa’s judgment on her looks)? What is so surprising is that Richard who was the main man in the act is being viewed as Africa’s golden child – as many African men claim that Richard was exercising his manhood. What manhood? A manhood that has sexual relationbigb.jpgs with two drunken woman? A manhood that inserts 5 fingers into another woman? In my book what took place last Saturday was rape. It was definitely not consensual because the female participants were not in the right frame of mind to participate in the act. If this is accepted by Africa – then we should be accepting men having sex with women after giving them date rape laced drinks as being a consensual act.

Another problem that I had with what took place was that Tatiana is not even being called to task for what happened, some could argue that it was because she was passed out but I think that it goes beyond that – I believe the reason she has been able to fly under the radar is because of her looks. This show proves what I have often believed, the more beautiful you are, the easier it is to get society to forgive your transgressions.
